Treating your pets like the valued family members they are is the goal of St. Francis Animal Hospital, and our goal starts from the get-go with specific wellness care for puppies and kittens. Although pet wellness care is vital for all stages of life for dogs and cats, it is especially vital when they are young. Las Vegas veterinarian Dr. David Drake can advise on the healthiest diet, living conditions and required exercise for new puppies and kittens, as well as provide care that's essential at this early stage of their lives.
One of the most important aspects of our puppy and kitten wellness care is our spay and neuter procedures. Spaying involves the removal of the reproductive organs of a female pet while neutering does the same for a male pet. Spay and neuter procedures at a young age can reduce the chances of your pet developing certain health issues. It can also improve behavior, helping to eliminate a male animal's territorial urge to urinate and a female animal's distress during the heat cycle. Households that contain several pets may also see a marked improvement in pet relations when the household pets are spayed or neutered.
Proper pet vaccinations is another vital part of our pet wellness plans for puppies and kittens. Vaccinations help prevent against contagious and potentially fatal diseases. Our puppy and kitten vaccinations include the core vaccines necessary to guard against diseases in the Las Vegas area, as well as any vaccines to protect traveling pets or those with additional needs. Because young pets are more prone to infectious diseases, our veterinarian recommends a series of vaccinations for the youngest kittens and pups, which usually occur at least every four weeks until the pet is about 16 weeks old, although the time frame may vary from pet to pet.
Puppies and kittens can be especially prone to various ailments and illnesses, which Dr. Drake can help prevent or treat at the earliest possible stages. Signs of illness in your pets can include abnormalities in their behavior, eating habits, movements. Puppies or kittens that are suddenly tired or have trouble standing up or lying down may be suffering from an ailment. Other signs that should prompt a trip to our animal hospital include abnormal discharge from the eyes or nose, limping or unexplained lumps, open sores or hair loss, and a change in appetite.
Our goal is to help pets live the longest and healthiest life possible, a goal that is more easily obtained with the proper care from a young age.
